As well as writing under my own name I’ve worked with Working Partners on a variety of highly commercial pen name projects. These include the Jessica Fox Hen Night books with Little Black Dress/Headline, Georgie Carter for Harper Collins and my Holly Cavendish book with Pan Macmillan. I keep my Ruth Saberton identity very different and distinctive but I enjoy the collaborative process of writing with a team of editors and I am always willing to consider similar projects or ghost writing.
I’ve also had a novel out called He Loves Me Knot under the name Lucy Hepburn which is published in Germany as Vom Ersten Tag An Und Fur Immer. There have also been approaches regarding celebrity novel ghost writing and collaborations but as I’m sure you can appreciate am not at liberty to divulge any further details.
School Visits and workshops/library visits
As well as being the author of over 25 novels, published both traditionally and independently, I am also an experienced presenter and deliverer of courses and a teacher of English with twenty years of experience, both in the UK and internationally. I have been Head of Pastoral Care, Head of Media and also Child Protection Officer.
I love to help students develop their talents, take their ambitions seriously and have fun with their writing. I also really enjoy looking at writing students have done themselves and love working with them to extend their ideas. To do this I have developed a range of workshops available to deliver in schools, libraries and to other aspiring writers. I can deliver small workshops, to whole classes or even large assemblies. My workshops are fun and interactive, creative and informal. My aim is to give writer of all ages some new skills to take away and build on. All sessions I deliver are tailored to needs of the individual group – this ranges from enrichment activities to a springboard for language at GCSE or to form the foundation for English Language AS/A2 coursework.
Talks and workshops can be individually designed to fit with current projects on the curriculum map at Key Stage 3 or course requirements at GCSE and AS/A2
I will always adapt my visit to fit the particular needs of the individual school and can provide a mixture of creative writing workshops, readings, talks Q and A on in depth discussion on the publishing world
I am really flexible and my many years of teaching experience is a huge bonus. I can work with large groups, a whole year group or workshops with smaller groups. I can fill the whole day or a morning or afternoon. Whatever suits you!
Workshops based on local history, current schemes of work or locations can be also be devised in partnership with class teacher.
Writing workshops/Festivals/Guest Speaking
I have been a guest speaker and led workshops at a variety of events including the Daphne du Maurier Festival in Fowey and the Looe Literary Festival. I am available to attend similar events and love to meet new people and share my writing journey so far.
As a qualified teacher of English please use the link below to discuss private individual tutoring for key stages 3 -
Please note only limited availability for tutoring.
Since the publication of my first novel, Katy Carter Wants a Hero, and the huge amount of press interest and publicity, I’ve had lots of emails from people asking me about my writing journey and how to get published or write a novel. I’ve given talks at literary festivals, such as the Du Maurier Festival in Cornwall, and often advice by email too, but I had a “light bulb” moment when walking on the cliffs -

What delegates have to say about my past courses.
“I had a lovely time over the weekend. You after us all so well – I don't think I've ever drank so many cups of tea! I think your workshops had the right blend of structure and going with the flow. It was very interesting and inspiring to listen to your own experience re writing, agents and publishing. Not all published writers will do that. You were very generous with your time to all of us. The number of people on the course was perfect. Many more and it would have spoilt the intimate atmosphere of people just sitting around the table listening and learning. And a regular Guest Star would be great!”

Thank you, Ruth, for such a relaxing, inspirational weekend in Polperro! Kirk House was the perfect setting, a cosy, charming and characterful house with stunning views of the harbour. I have fond memories of sitting around the big wooden table with you and the other girls on the course, devouring tea, cakes and the delicious food prepared by your catering team.
The Workshops were interesting and informative and I loved the fact that they were so relaxed and informal; I really enjoyed sharing ideas and experiences with you and the girls, and I learnt so much, especially about the curious world of Agents and Publishers! I also found it helpful to learn more about planning and plotting a novel and more about characterisation. The writing tasks were great fun too!
I left Polperro with a head full of ideas and inspiration for my novel and I couldn't wait to get home and start writing again. You gave me the push I needed to believe in my writing, so thank you for your advice and encouragement and for sharing your invaluable knowledge with us. All the best with your next novel!
“ I really enjoyed it -
The mix of "teaching" and practical writing really worked well too.
To sum up, as a "baby" writer I found the course extremely stimulating and encouraging and it has done exactly what I had hoped it would -
“Ruth's course was perfect for me, I'm one of those people with lots of writing ideas, but had no idea where to start! I've come away feeling really confident and know exactly where I'm going, thanks to all the advice and technique tips. And I had no idea about all the things you need to know about, like agents, publishers, marketing, etc, so now I have so many reference points to follow up and know the best ways to approach them!
The whole experience was enriched by sharing with our group, I met some lovely people and Ruth made us all feel very welcome and relaxed, I certainly felt comfortable enough to share some of my ideas, it felt like I was sat with friends, and socialising with them after seminars in Polperro was great fun!
I'm now feeling confident and inspired and fully armed to just go for it!”
